Some background:

Just got posted to Singapore and was surprised to find this forum. I think this is just great. I was once a music student at uni and I think headphones are the way to go as you get real high-fidelity for a modest outlay for under 1000 uk pounds. I used to teach musicology in Germany before as well.

I used to be a Sennheiser fan many years ago and discovered that as good as they were (the HD-600) there are much better buys. I used the Sennheier with an X-Cans and the pair was quite good.

Then I discovered Stax which I sold just before coming here. Had the 4040. Anyplace that I can look for some nice gear besides the basic stuff like Creek and X-Cans?

Eager to try the Beyerdynamic DT-880 and some Grados. Grados are so expensive in the UK.

My current CD player is the Roksan Caspian (bedroom) and I have Meridien as well. Also have a Linn LP12 turntable - any vinyl guys here?

Is there good place that sell headroom stuff here? Stereophile has got some of these amplifiers well reviewed. I'm looking to try out the crossfeed.

Hi ashleybenton, welcome to SGheadphones. Regarding the DT880, you could drop a PM to Mackie, I am sure he could give you a excellent offer. For Grados, you could check it out with Raimeish. I don't Grado is the only expensive thing in UK, everything thing there is bleedin expensive. Enjoy.... headphone.gif

Hi!

Warm welcome from me. Enjoy ! happy.gif

For grados, check out with rameish. He also deals with corda amps, which have inbuilt crossfeed, said to be more natural than the headroom's. You might want to try those out.

Welcome, you can also find audiotechnica and koss phones at Hung Brothers.

Basically, if you want to find some hifi stuff in Singapore, go Adelphi and the Sim Lim Square headphone.gif

Yeah...was prowling around and finally saw the sticky. Should have looked before I jumped. So no headroom amps here. Well I'm a firm believer in auditioning before buying. The X-Cans were a nice budget class amplifier but is not suited to many cans.

Will give this Hung a try. So Mackie sells Beyerdynamic cans. Hmm...might audition the DT-880 with the DT-931. Where's his hi-fi shop?

Will also give this Raimeish a try. I'll just PM him. Where's his shop? Sorry but I'm new in town.

Ablaze,

The Stax 4040 were nice but are not full-range headphones. If you like opera, vocals etc. they could be just the ticket. They really lack low end resolution. Double bass doesn't go deep enough and lacks the defination if you know what I mean. But as sure as god made little apples, you'll start to look for excitement elsewhere.

What or where is SLS? SLS shopping center?

Lengcm,

It's the VAT! That's why I sold off most of my stuff in the UK. Now I'm on the look out for good buys but need to audition. Too many times in the past I've bought based on price and paid for it as reality did not meet expectations. I realised that, many hi-fi dealers don't know what they are talking about. The become speachless as soon as I pass them my calling card.

Cheers.

Any Leeds United fans here? I understand that Singapore is a place full of English league fans.

I am currently in Leeds but unfortunately not a fan of Leeds. I do agree with you the VAT is a killer, just got slapped with a 50 pounds VAT for my Equinox cable. I still can't believe it.

By the way what cans are you using? The X-cans v2 is a good amp, except you need to do some modifications. Please check out this site by Mike (aka Pinkie, Pinkfloyd).

Ashley,

You're welcome to try the Grados and Beyer DT-880 at my home. Since you're familier witht the Sennheiser HD-600 you can use that as your reference. I do bring in Corda Amps from Germany

visit www.meier-audio.com for details. You'll also see that Dr.Jan Meier has me listed as his representative in Singapore for Corda, For reviews on Corda visit head-fi.org or headwize.com.

You can send me an email to make an appointment and I will set up the prefered system for you. Bring your CDP if you prefer.

BTW. I'm not like most dealers because I'm actually a rep. I carry no stock on Grados but can get most models withing 24 hours (except Sunday LOL). As for Corda I've just run out of the HA-1 (MkI). But more are coming in soon (within a week). Demo unit is still with me so you can audition it.

Welcome to the forum.

Ashley,

Welcome to the forum! biggrin.gif

I'm not a dealer but I have an overseas contact who is clearing his stock and thence, the power buy. I'm currently using the X-cans to drive the DT880, which replaced HD600 within 15-mins of audition. If U wish to try this combo, drop by my place and check it out. U may end up committing on a pair of DT880 though. tongue.gif

I'm a vinyl lover too. Used to own LP12 exactly 12 years ago. Currently, I have a more humble TT ie Thorens TD321.

Welcome Ashley,

How long have you owned the LP12? I've got one too but I have't used it for a long time. Need to have a major service.
