  1. Welcome to the world of etys!! If you feel uncomfortable, try modding it by cutting off the top flange. You still have the old tips right? I'm glad someone familiar got the Etys. $280 is really a good price.
  2. if you sell all of them, you can buy 1 or 2 really good headphones....
  3. My favourite album just got remastered. So far, I actually prefer the original version as the vocals are more real and warm even though the instruments are less clear. In the original release the track 'So Real' replaced 'Forget Her' at the very last minute. For the first time, 'Forget Her' is released in the 2nd disc of bonus tracks. Now this track is a gem!
  4. haha speak of the devil... My 868 died of the same reasons too, after using it for 4 years. I guess the wire broke at the junction when the main cablewire split to form the left and right wire cable. The 888 is fragile in other ways too. Take care not to blast them too loudly as the drivers are unable to take it.
  5. Ack! dAck! is a NOS DAC based on the TDA1545T chip. Feeling bored during the holidays, I decided to make measurements of my equipment using the version 5.4 of RMAA. The stars of show are Revolution 7.1 soundcard, Denon DCD-835 and NEC MultiSpin 6Xe. It is by no means conclusive or statistically significant but I tried my best to make it so. All tests were repeated 3-4 times and I took the median values. All cables (digital + RCA-Mini) used are the same for all 3 tests. Connection is from Transport -> digital cable -> Ack! dAck! -> RCA-Mini cable -> M-audio Revolution 7.1 soundcard line-in. The wav files are burnt on a CDr and same CDr is used for both NEC 6xe and Denon DCD-835 cd players. For the soundcard, foobar2000 is used. Settings are kernel streaming, no DSP or replaygain involved. Here are the results Denon NEC Revolution 7.1 Overall comparison Some of the results surprised me and not like what I heard. Can anyone explain some of the terms, particularly IMD and THD?
  6. No more new gear for this year? you have 2 weeks before the new year! You can order now and it prob won't arrive until 2005.
  7. Bill Evans Trio - Waltz For Debby XRCD Bill Evans Trio- Sunday At The Village Vanguard Both of them are amazing recordings. Even the little noises like coughing is captured vividly. Next time if you are at a live recording, don't cough so loudly!!
  8. They will be the same quality in the sense that all CDs are in 16bit format. But just like other CD players, playing the same CD doesn't mean both will have the same sound. For example, a $1000 cd player will most definitely sound better than a boombox even though they are playing the same disc. The reason is due to the variations in DAC, power supply or output stage from one another. I'm not sure how the bose acoustimass works. If it has an amplifier built in, then connect your soundcard to the amp via a Mini-RCA or Mini-Mini interconnect to the soundcard's analog out (should be the green one). http://foobar2000.org/ for playing songs in computer format and upsampling. http://www.exactaudiocopy.org/ http://www.cdex.n3.net/ for ripping CD into wav format.
  9. very nice and even braiding!! throughly impressive. Is that 3 braids for a channel? any chance to let us know how u did it?
  10. nope. All cds are 16bit and 44.1khz. So if you see any value higher than that, it is probably the original source from 24bit 192khz etc. It is possible to play up to 24bit 192khz and most pple use foobar2000 to upsample it. But the difference is up to you to hear. It is quite minute to me. Yes it is possible to use your bose provided you have the correct connectors.
  11. interesting. Purely for display purposes? No testing?
  12. happy birthday ablaze! and thanks for your forum.

  17. While listening to Tchaiskovsky's 1812 Overture, Op. 49 on my discman and etys 4s, the combo distorted when the canons boomed!
  18. how about putting thirsty hippos in a cool, dark and dry place together with CDs? Weird, my CDs hardly have fungus, only those that I haven't played in several years and it is pretty minor. And they aren't air conditioned most of the time. They are kept in a drawer though.
  19. Well I'm sure they will answer this thread if they want to.
  20. hehe there are some alessandros in singapore. btw, the observatory is a great band!
  21. Some amps that function as both integrated and as preamp. Some amps that I can think of: Audiovalve RKV with the Impedanzer, Berning ZOTL,Consonance Cyber 30, Meier-Audio Prehead MK I and MK II, Headamp Gilmore V2, PPA (can be customised with pre out although few people do it), Sugden Headmaster. I have the beyer DT880 and it sounds pretty great with vocals and jazz. To me,headphones is the largest factor on the sound and I do recommend that you audition them first before buying. A headphone meet is most probably coming up soon in January and there will be a large number of amps and headphones for you to try.
  22. I can't access the computertimes website so I assume the system comes with the cheaper linux and not Windows XP. I'm not sure if you have tried Linux before but it is not that easy as compared to Windows. If the drivers do not work in linux, you can always revert back to Windows. U have the installation disc for Windows right?
