  1. Mac, I might just go ahead and try this mod. BTW, I didn't quite understand the "remove all the parts inside-out". Do you mean from the cushions? Or from the outside? Just to confirm, otherwise I might spoil my baby.
  2. More like bull dog. Yeah, Bar has improved a lot, powered by Honda. I reckon they just need to have the car handle a bit better and they could pose a serious challenge to Williams and Renault.
  3. It is a very good analog tuner, unfortunately my low level apartment cannot get a very good radio signal to take full advantage of its capabilities. So if you are at least fairly serious about listening to good radio, especially 92.4, this can get you pretty good quieting and a big soundstage.
  4. Routing for Montoya this year.

Anyone compared the T610 and the Samsung V200 or X400?

I have the same phone as you and am also considering the switch to the sony. How do you like the T610 compared to the 6510?
  7. I widened the aluminium bars of the DT990 so that the cans doesn't clamp my head so much and the cans sounded slightly different, like a bit livier, less bass, also less fatiguing due to lower clamp pressure. I listened to more music on the DT990s and found them to be really quite nice, musical, warm, with good instrument separation and tonality. The Melos' tight control over the bass certainly matches well with these cans. Although on certain "bright" music, the highs were a little overboard. The strength of these cans are really in the bass dept. Deep, tight and well defined. On certain electronic pieces, the mid range tonal balance is really well developed. Very clean sound and needs to be driven hard to get the best out of these cans. Did a comparison with the ATH W100s and the W100s were slightly different in terms of : speed - certainly faster. It not necessarily means that slow is bad, or fast is good, rather it really depends on the kind of music. When you want to appreciate a legato, adagio, certainly the slower can would be better. Soundstage - felt more near field/close up compared to the open DT990 and therefore more appropriate for laid back music. In a sense it did not separate instruments as well as the DT990. Bass response - certainly was there and tighter than the DT990. This helped to contribute to the sense of pace and rythm. Treble was not as bright and certainly could take higher SPLs before breaking up. Overall, both are good cans. If I want to relax, I suppose the DT990s are it, while the W100s are for more critical listening. Both communicate the music well and are full range, ie the bass is heard/felt. System : CEC TL2 > Meridian 566 DAC > Melos SHA-1(stock) Can anyone loan a DT880/HD600/K1000/SR225?
  8. CDP. No point adding an additional stage in between you and the source.
  9. Take a look at the iRiver IMP400, IMO very good SQ.
  10. Impressive man! Great work.
  11. Ok, will go for it. Thanks.
  12. I believe its LHS in SLT for the Hubbell and Wattgates. Bryant and Wattgate you can get New Disc Village.
  13. he's got a real problem with the wall.
  14. Past vs Present. Well in the past, most recordings were simple 2 mic in studio/concert hall, while those of today are multimic'd on a mixing console, a much more complicated exercise. Now depending on the type of equipment used, some tube, some solid state, the older recordings generally had less electronics involved in the recording - hence were more true to the performance. Just think about performances recorded direct to master tape, while current recordings going to mixers, equalisation, re-mix, etc... Especially in current pop recordings, each performer is recorded separately in diff recording chambers and mixed. Equalisation, timing, L/R pan, front/depth perspective all has to be done on the console. In the past, tube equipment was also more prevalent, which contributed to the warmth in the recordings. That is not to say that current recordings are no good. With the advancement in technology, digital recordings now are of a much higher quality than they used to be. The current equipment used in a number of studios is the EMM Labs DSD machine which has a very broad bandwidth 0-100khz and over 100db dynamic range. Also with higher sampling rates, there is less digital noise, jitter, etc...So with SACD and DVDA now becoming available, recordings are now kept in DSD format. Hallmarks of a good recording. Well there are many. Tonal quality, low noise, good dynamics, recording venue spacial cues = or air/soundstage. Most important is whether the emotional content in the music is captured and brought to your listening room, ops cans.
  15. U'll need a step-up tranformer to facilitate use of 110V product with local 240V rating. Do not be perturbed as to its impact on sound quality for some units can be adjusted to feed in an exact (on meter) level but these cost much more than conventional ones. Excuse me, but I thought the correct term was step down for using 110-115v eqt here? Wall power @230v step down to 115v correct? No?
  16. Thanks, will keep a lookout for this label.
  17. RawHit If you read HeadFi postings, especially fr Carlo(famous for his Maestrobator), you'll note that the pre section on the std SHA-1 was put in as an afterthought, whereas the Gold and Maestro versions have full preamp sections, plus other refinements. So the preamp and headamp, although have a lot in common, have diff objectives. If the gain for the headamp and preamp are diff, it could very easily mean that one would be better than the other for that specific application. I did try out the Melos as a pre in my setup, and it sounded very noisy. Now it does do the function of a preamp, but without the proper preamp stage put in, it won't perform optimally in that application. I suspect the gain was also too high for my poweramp as well, but it was noisy. Disclaimer : I'm not a techy, correct me if there's an error.
  18. See how much you miss when you miss a meet. Well, if you do drop into the Clementi area, you can give av98m for an audition.
  19. Rameish, thanks for the Grado writeup. I will have a listen when I'm ready(?)
  20. While auditioning the SR80 and switching to the W100 powered by the incredibly transparent BB amp, I felt that the W100 and the SR80 were actually similar despite one being closed and the other very open. The difference was that the SR80 was a thinner sounding and more distant, while the W100 was obviously more comfortable. Eqt used : NAD 541>Synergistic Research AV Decor>BB amp
  21. If the sound coincides with bass music, then it maybe that the cans are struggling to produce that note. Alternatively, it could be due to electrical interferences, ie when someone switches on the lights, etc... or a dirty contact, or a scratched CD.
  22. Rameish, since you have the most experience with the Grados, could you share your insights on how the sound changes as you go up the line? Is it true that the Grado signature sound is the same throughout the line, or do the cans sound very different despite being from the same family?
  23. fuwen, any specific artists or music to recommend on this label?
  24. Mods, shouldn't this thread be in the music section?
