Most of the time, the KS people you described are of the older generation. But hard to blame them as the environment they grew up in is different from ours.

Hmm...when I was in Primary 1 (1969) we were almost never late, siad thank you, yes please, and you're welcome. Of course I lived in a different time and a somewhat sheltered life. In the early seventies I was shocked to find out that 3 or more families live in shophouse and shared one toilet. While my family lived in a 5-bedroom house next to the beach (where marine parade is now) and had three bathrooms and three toilets. Hence less panic LOL.

Wortel: U've a misunderstanding.......contrary to your belief, S'pore is just too orderly and this is the problem as pent up frustrations seek conduits for releasal. The incident mentioned above is one of them. Law and order is not the problem. The MAJOR problem is general social etiquette.

general social etiquette in Darwin is very tame. Everybody satnds in line at subway no pushing or shoving this is the supreme example.

I've heard that subway in other city they scream and shouts and no lines.

My sister was 4~5 months pregnant and whe was wearing those pregnant dress. For the past 1 month, only 2 people gave up their sit for her.

The first occasion started like this: She and another women are standing side by side wif no seats available. Suddenly the one between them got emptied and the other women tried to snatch it without knowing my sis is pregnant. So what my sis did was, touching her tummy and act in unbearable pain. That women gave up... wink.gif

The second one is in a MRT, a negro gave up her sit for my sis... sleep.gif

By then, she and I came up with a conclusion. Those that had gave up their seats are foreigners... wacko.gif

Unfortunately I have to agree with Ablaze that Singaporeans can be a really sad lot of people. I'm a Singaporean and it shames me to say this.

One other incident was the recent charity thing by Creative CEO, Mr Sim. I recall reading that he bought the remaining stock of the closing down 1.99 store and was selling to the public, at whatever price they wanted to pay. And he would match dollar for dollar and donate the money to charity. Then in came some lady who bought 20 items for 20 cents and some kid who bought 20 items, paid 20 cents and wanted change! Or some guy who went in there grabbed a case of stuff and insisted the whole case counted as one item!

When I read that I was deeply saddened ... we have bad drivers, uncouth public ... and god knows what else ... the only thing I can conclude is that we're not a very matured society. And perhaps becuase of that, our government enforces strict rules and adopts the philosophy "big brother knows best"
