Wortel 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2003 Im not enjoying them that much. Make no mistake these are very nice cans. The quality on my mp3s is shocking and the 501s just bring out the worst in them. Im really gonna be needing an amp. I've got my soundcards headphone amp cranked all the way. Its gets kinda loud but sounds quite aweful. needs more clean power. Bass is ok for my needs. Not good for rap music. I put on some classical and this is where these cans shine. Good soundstage and good definition. Im so not used to having huge cans on my head. I guess I'll get used to it. Jarthel I need you. Im guesiing after I plug in an amp and use some quality recordings these things will impress me much more. Still the best cans Ive ever heard. Mackie 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2003 I reckon U need a good CD source more than an amp as the latter will just amplify the weakness of your current source. Varian and Sipher listen to their cans direct from their cdps and even Blues can attest to the leap in sound quality relative to his soundcard.

Weak source But how much will I need to spend to get a good CDP??... No I cant afford one. I put up with the soundcard for now. Jarthel is going to help me build an amp Jarthel is a champ. N@Z 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2003 Do you have a copy of Diana Krall's The look of love CD on MP3? Listen to that then try listening to the same on a good CDP. Tell me what you hear what was not there before.
Mackie 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2003 I don't know about Aussie land...perhaps fishball can help. Start with a Marantz CD4000 which costs just below S$200 in S'pore. U may also source for a used cdp as it gives U good bang for the buck; provided it's free of defects.
ablaze 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2003 whats the soundcard you're using Wortel?
Blues 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2003 use revo and rip the cds at lossless format is the cheapest route to good sound I reckon.. if you don't have the cd.. try and look for higher bitrates mp3 to ensure higher quality sound. Of course taken into account I haven't heard revo, but many in head-fi find them quite up to par on low - mid low cd ps. So I reckon this should be on par or perhaps better the entry level cdps.
