    DTX 900

This is a classic example why magazine reviews can only be taken with a pinch of salt. Search this forum for earlier (very early) discussion. DTX series may sound better than some commercial cans (read none audiophile) but against SR60? Even a beyer fan such as I have huge reservation. YMMV of couse.
  2. But DT770 is not suitable for classical music. Maybe a semi-open design like the current DT880 is more suitable to your palate.
  3. In a nutshell, gain consideration. LINE level (audio) sources are much-amplified signals over MIC (microphone) level signals. Line level is usually between -10 to +4 dBm in strength while MIC levels are normally -60 dBm.
  4. I concur. You already know what you like so why defer to Goldring instead? If so, you might as well take a look at Beyer, AT and AKG. However, do take a look at what MS has to offer as it won't stray too far away from the Grado signatures that you've grown to like.
  5. I'm surprised as DT990 is an open back design whilst DT880 being semi-open. If closed design has the most narrow soundstage, then DT990 should sound more open than DT880. If the reverse finding is true, perhaps the run-in condition/system used is a factor.
  6. It introduces time delay to the audio signal, thus, creating a sense of space; contributing to the term sensurround in the old days. It bodes well for video (concert/movies) but not audio in its pure form.
  7. Insofar, all your judgement were based on reviews and hearsay and none of personal experience. Let your ears decide, there's is no clear winner when personal preference is a variable and a big one at that. There are a few points which I really find subjective, once again proving opinions are not usually consistent. For instance, I don't find treble of DT880 colored; in fact no trace of it that I can fathom. I gather your source will be a MP3 player? In regard to your favored genre, I wouldn't recommend the pre 2005/06 edition of DT880. You either look at the more expensive contemporary DT880/990 or the current Senns and ATs. U need to visit Jaben and SE to come to terms with your preference. The fact that these places allow auditions is definitely a boon. However, wait till your amp arrives so you can audition the cans with you source and amp as a unit.
  8. There are numerous options of different price range. Walk around Adelphi for a start. Otherwise, search for alternatives from made-to-order racks which give the best value for money. There used to be one who produced these BTO in www.extremeplace.com. Search the classifieds of which and also www.echoloft.com for possibly good deals. I'm currently using Schroers & Schroers rack. Stereo Electronics used to be the dealer.
  9. Frankly, you should speak to a professional about this. Albert, who was formerly the front man of Anything Audio, has exited the retail sector but still conducts PA consultation/installation from his home office. You could give him a call at 97543050.
  10. I assume it's Klotz GY107, otherwise, please specify for public interest. Thanks.
  11. As per the rules in this section, unnecessary chatter posts were deleted. Once again, please direct all enquiries via pm/email direct to seller. Thanks.
  12. Ah...since you already have a portable amp, purchase of the GS1K will be feasible. What's more you can build a home system around it without having to fuss around with another can purchase.
  13. U can read up about it on the review section. I've done both reviews using the same system. http://www.sgheadphones.net/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=4695 http://www.sgheadphones.net/index.php?showtopic=191
  14. Don't forget the digital bit 1 and 0 are converted to analogue signal and thus, the resultant sound will vary.
  15. It really depends what your priority is, sound or portability or looks. I wear iems, earbuds, ear clips and cans on the go (pass by SP everyday...) but usually fall back on my DT770pro and sometimes DT831. I've tried SR80 but it didn't work out as there's too much interference. If Ultrasone HFI-15G costs less than $150, it will certainly be my choice for a portable can.
  16. Well if you can't discern the quality of mp3 over cd track, it aint wise to spend so much money on a GS1K. It would seem to me this outlay is simply to pacify you in knowing that you own something great but may not be appreciated for now. With a budget of $1.6K, you could buy a respectable home system and with change to spare of a good cans for your ipod.
  17. After spending about 15 mins trying to make sense from senseless talk, I discovered his creater is David Bacon who designed SETL. How much truth is there, this I won't know.
  18. A warning though, if you were to remove the blu tac after a long period of time stuck on the wall, the paint will also peel.
  19. There are closed design option that may not sound totally like a Grado but certainly not inferior like a PX200. However, it could look bigger and certainly more expensive, eg Beyer DT770pro. There's actually potential for Ultrasone HFI-15G which I rather fancy as a portable can but its high price (near $200+ at the former AA) simply puts it out of contention.
  20. Evil zen: Are you referring to the Basic System II series or the Lambda Nova System series? Although the drivers look similar (SR-202 vs SR-Xh for instance), the electrostatic diaphrams of the Basic System II and Lambda Nova System series are different in material and thickness. My SR-2020 system does not sound anything like Senn but perhaps a little like DT880 with fuller mid bass. Actually, it sounded more like K1000 with bass to me. I've not tried the SR-202 earspeakers with other amps but till now, I find that it has similar traits as Electrostatic speakers, which I've owned, and largely free from colorations. However, coloration inhibited by other parts of the system could still be imparted, be them electrostatic, horn or dynamic speakers. In your opinion, does the Stax 006t tube amp impart more warmth in the midrange over its solid-state equivalent? laukinkon: It's certainly not hype, I believe the Stax systems are really good but as evil zen had mentioned, your concern is value for money. However, the portable SR-001 MKII system did not really bode well for me as it has a rather steep rolloff in the highs but I kinda like its rather punchy bass for something this small.

    portapro pads

If they are the same size as KSC75, shop around your neighbourhood hardware stores or even cd shows such as Popular, Sembawang etc. Make sure you bring along the one you had for comparison. If not, buy the larger one,
  22. I year older in age but wiser. Have fun guys!
  23. In a word........color-free. Electrostatics drivers are free from colorations (warmth is one of them, believe it or not) and the Stax 2020 system will reward you with this kinda sound aside from its openness which translates to wide soundstaging. Aside from its refined tonality and accurate timbre, transients are sharp while bass carries enough slam for acoustic jazz and classical genre. However, this Stax system may not handle rock and hip-hop to general preference (me included). Personally, I feel that the equivalent Senn and Beyer should sound more exciting bass wise but I always fall back to the Stax for a neutral and color-free sound for classical, new-age and sometimes jazz genre. But if you dislike neutrality, the Stax could sound sterile.
  24. I also have the Stax SR-001MK2 but always partnered with a pcdp and not my ipod shuffle. The stax isn't cheap and given the price, you could do better in sound quality by getting a portable amp such as PA2V2 or Xenos and a closed design can/iem. Moreover, the Stax really eats energizers as snacks and only the lithium versions last longer. In terms of sound quality and running cost, I suggest you drop the idea on the Stax. But if you really like it, buy it by all means. Passion and sensibility always contradict each other, that's why I also own this Stax portable system.
  25. aaaaawwwwww......I'm sure something could be done to rectify it.
