Charismatic: that's the whole idea  laugh.gif  ...  to "invite" the gurus in to comment. i'm using a dedicate cdp, not the best, but better than a pcdp. i see u have the creek obh-11 and senn hd600, care to comment on the sound and the type of music you listen to?

oh so non-gurus aren't welcome? laugh.gif

What cdp r u using?

Thanks for all the comments biggrin.gif

I doubt the Senn HD600 will be phased out that soon, a new product is even good news for me as it means the HD600's price might go lower.

Rameish: I am keeping the Creek for a while and see how it goes first. I wanted to get a simple pair of cans initially but well .... Anyway, my source is a Micromega Stage 3, cable is a 1m Nordost Blue Heaven.

Charismatic: no lah... all comments welcome... thanks for yours too.

Hmm...Micromega Stage 3 is warm (very analogue), Creek is warm, Nordost is very detailed and a bit on the hard side of things. Either a Beyer DT-880, DT-931 or Grado SR-225 would be my pick for the majority of the music (60% pop/rock and Jazz). For classical Senn HD-600 is very good followed by DT-880. DT-880 is better for other thypes of music though as it has better bite and corrects many of the Senn HD-600 flaws.

lengcm, what do you mean by veiled? cut off, not fully extended? or muffled, not clear?

Veiled as in lack of transparency.....like having a thin curtain drawn across your aural vision.

My personal take on the HD600 is not veiled but laid back presentation as I find that it doesn't lack detail or transparency but this is in the system I use (plus the clou red cable).

I've tried lengcm's HD600 + Stephan Audio's Equinox cable and I concur with U, Naz. In fact, I think it gives DT880 a very close fight and maybe excel in some sonic departments but I've only had it on for minutes and hence, inconclusive.

IMO, stock HD600 is veiled and the cable is obviously the culprit.

actually, about the 'veil'. another way to reduce it is to remove the THICK foam covering on the driver (it sits between the driver and your ear), that thing if you think about is, literally LIKE a curtain between you and the music! happy.gif

Be careful to anyone thinking of carrying out that mod, you could actually introduce more brightness/harshness unless you experiment with different 'nylons' to cover over the removed stock pads. It's also not a good idea to leave it bare & exposed to dust & loose hair which may fall on to the drivers.

I favour the route of external mods on HD600 as I now know its weakness is in the cable and not structually nor design.

hey guys, the HD650's on Senn germany's page! http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm.n...s_aktuell_hd650

Reaching for the stars, audio-wise

(translated by eric343)

HD650 – The new miracle of sound from headphone-specialist Sennheiser

July 23, 2003. At the international radio exhibition in Berlin, Sennheiser releases a new high-end headphone onto the market: With the HD650, Sennheiser shows how headphones can sound even better.

For the ultimate in musical perfection, the audiophile need only lay back with a pair of good headphones and a few audio DVDs. The perfection of music is getting even better – the new HD650 from microphone- and headphone-specialist Sennheiser will satisfy the most demanding purist. With the HD650, every beat becomes an experience, the sound becomes alive, the room becomes a concert hall.

For many years the name of Sennheiser has been synonymous with sound quality. Already, the successful HD600 from the innovative enterprise from Wedemark has impressed the trade press and hi-fi fans; the readers of audio-magazines have bestowed the designation of “Golden Ear†on the HD600.

The new HD650 raises the bar through an open and dynamic fabrication technique. It improves on the HD600 in expression and emotion, so that with the HD650, the listener is offered the absolute best of the best, reminding the experienced audiophile of the electrostatic Orpheus system. With this noble headphone and amplifier combination (of which only 300 were built), Sennheiser (according to the unanimous opinion of the experts) set the benchmark for absolute sound quality.

Yet with the HD650, the perfect sound has been brought within the reach of the common man. The search for an even better dynamic headphone brought Sennheiser into discussion with high-end specialists, sound engineers, and trade journalists – even internet forums were polled for their opinion. What was learned from this intensive search? The desires of the listener have changed. People want to experience music, not analyze it; hence the idea of a headphone that pulls the music-lover under its spell through vivacity without giving up any precision in rendering the music.

The HD650 is a headphone with soul – and for this reason Sennheiser bestowed upon it depth of bass and natural highs. The frequency response encompasses 10 to 39500Hz (!!!). Advanced system damping and resonance-killing foam (or pads?) reduce the spurious oscillation of the driver and make possible a much more exact aural image, especially in the bass region – though even the tonality is absolutely accurate. A specially developed acoustic diaphragm material with consistent damping reduces the distortion to a fantastic 0.05% at 1kHz.

Music lovers can look forward to certain, hand selected systems. The outside finish of the headphones with its noble silver/titanium colored surface allows the hearts of music lovers to beat faster in anticipation.

The board chairman of Sennheiser, professor of electro-acoustics Dr. Jörg Sennheiser, is proud of the new development. “The HD650 is not simply a headphone – it represents our philosophy and our responsibility to come as close as possible to natural sound.â€

As one of the leading producers of headphones, microphones, and wireless transmission systems worldwide, the Sennheiser Group is based in the Wedemark. In the year 2002 it grossed over 229 million Euros; exports accounting for 80 percent of that total. Sennheiser employs around 1500 workers, 800 in Germany, with daughter companies in France, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Singapore, Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
