This might have been mentioned before but not in a specific thread.

I particularly like the midrange & soundstage of the K501. Stock HD600 is fairly good but IMO is beaten in the midrange & soundstage without the upgrade cable. ATH-W100 sounds similar with stronger bass but soundstage is slightly less & the sound is also slightly 'thicker'. Is it possible to have the sound of the K501 with slightly more bass (I don't want to lose the resolution). On it's own it sounds great but slightly more bass would make it fantastic.

I am also a fan of the AKG K501 and agree about the lack of low bass response. My understanding was that there will be an AKG K601 or whatever soon. Perhaps they have addressed this issue and if so AKG will have a winner.

For accurate reproduction in mids and highs, the AKG K501 is tops.

But then there's Grado, with that up-tempo smack you in the face dynamic sound that keeps me coming back for more.

At least with my Alessandro MS2s I don't doze off like I used to with HD 600s! yawn.gif

tigger, nice to see you on the boards thumbup1.gif

Maybe that's why N@z like to listen to his cans and fall asleep tongue.gif , wrong cans dude!

Now send the HD600's to me, thanks! haha.gif

not much can be added with the gilmore amp for the AKG 501 though. Although the gilmore has really tight and good bass, it fails to make up for the initial gap in bass for the 501s.

Hi N@Z,

How "bad" is the lack of bass compared to say, a HD600?

Same here for the Sudgen. Anyone had a listen with RKV?

Let's just say AKG 501 is meant for classical music as per the manufacturer's recommendation. Hence, bass performance is definitely not its forte.

I like it with Jazz & acoustic type music.

If compared with the HD600 they lack a fairly significant amount of bass but I notice if I listen to it exclusively, I no longer look for it as the detail is there just less oomph. If I can still listen to it & enjoy the music then it doesn't really matter that the bass is leaner.

"significant" sounds kinda scary. ;p

I'd probably need to audition them for myself to see if it's ok for me. I am currently using a borrowed HD600 and the bass is just about right for my classical stuff, even piano solos, organ works, orchestral works, etc. But that's out of budget. ;p
